A Guide To Koi Fish Tattoo Designs

In this guide I like to tell you about some of the myths and legends associated with this wonderful fish, and hopefully give you some good ideas for your next tattoo.
This fish has often been seen as a symbol of determination and triumph against the odds, and a fish of beauty and style, and that is one of the reasons this tattoo design is one of the most sort after today.
The history is relatively new (200 years) and the mythology surrounding them is one of perseverance and triumph over adversity.
The Carp fish came from Europe, China and Korea long before it came to Japan; but the Japanese kept the carp as pets and due to inbreeding, mutations appeared, and these different coloured carp were then called Koi which is short for nishikigoi, meaning coloured carp.
In Chinese mythology, the Koi begins its journey upstream finding a way until it climbs the falls of the dragon gate on the Yellow river, then the fish will come out of the water transformed into a dragon. You will often see this tattoo design as a dragons' face emerging from the water.
I think most of at sometime have had to face our own upstream struggles, and that is another reason for the popularity of this design, it is that connection of struggle against the odds, and the power you feel when you emerge stronger and wiser (like the dragon) from your ordeal.
And finally, this fish is seen as a good luck charm, and we could all do with a bit extra luck now and then. I hope this guide has given you some insight into the mythology surrounding this wonderful design, and if you would like to see some really good fish designs, then go to my site at: http://guidetotattoodesigns.com
