Getting a Tattoo - Advice for Placement

If you're thinking about getting a tattoo, where you place it on your body is as important as what the tattoo looks like. Placement is one of the important aspects of the overall tattoo design process. To achieve the best in tattooing, careful consideration should be given to the shape of a tattoo and where on the body it might be placed. For example, long thin imagery looks best on an arm or leg. On the other hand, an image that is approximately the same width as the height looks best on larger flat areas like the back, upper chest, pectoral, upper arm or back of calf.

The size (width & length) and shape of the tattoo dictates where the tattoo should be placed. You can have one of the nicest tattoos in the neighborhood but if it's on the wrong part of the body it won't be as good as it could be. Have you ever seen a big muscle bound dude at the beach with a little sword on his bicep - looks more like a skin blemish than a tattoo. A person like this should have a wider, fuller image that complements his muscular physic.

You should be concerned about the flow of the tattoo design and how well it complements the shape of your body. Your body is a flat canvas with lots of round parts. Some areas of your body may be fuller or larger than someone else's making what looks good on them look bad on you. If you're considering inking a large round part of your body like the shoulder, the artwork should be of such a nature that it has arching or curving parts that compliment the roundness of the shoulder.

Determining where or how to place a tattoo requires experience. This is where the expertise of your tattooist is best used. An experienced tattoo artist knows and understands the importance of placement for any form of tattoo design. When getting a tattoo discuss your plans with your inker to make sure your idea complements your body type. It's good advice to listen to your inker, they may suggest changes to either the design or placement or both in order to maximize the beauty of the tattoo.

Are you thinking about having a hangman's rope or barbed wire tattooed on your neck? Maybe you're a woman thinking a long stem rose wrapping around your lower leg is cute. Maybe you've been thinking of having a four letter word tatted on your fingers. Before you get tattoos of this nature make sure your life style will support radical tattooing ideas. Sure the populace has a greater acceptance of tattooing than ever before but hiring managers, father/mother in-laws and others are going to think poorly of these kinds of tattoo decisions. The best advice anyone can give you is to place your tattoos in areas that can be covered with clothing. Once you become king of your universe you can go with radical forms of tattooing, but until then use common sense for your tattoo placement.

Advice For Your First Tattoo

If you are looking to get your first tattoo your first question might be how painful is the experience. Well, I can tell you it's not that bad, I'd say most people could easily spend 1 hour getting inked before they started to feel the needles. And remember, your tattooist is experienced enough to know when to give you a break, they want this to be as good experience as you do.
Have you a tattoo design in mind? Getting this step right is essential as you don't want to have any regrets. It's ok to have a tattoo "just because it looks great", what I suggest is you look for something with a deeper meaning or message. Do you want a tattoo to show your independence, individuality, or perhaps in remembrance of a special occasion such as birth or death of a loved one?
If you want my advice don't rush into it, understand your tattoo is a lifelong commitment, and not a gift you can easily return. Yes, you can paint over an existing design or have it removed altogether, either way you will feel the pain in your wallet, long after the scarring has healed.
The hardest part of this journey is deciding what design you will be happy to display. My advice is find your design first before you venture into a tattoo parlor, or you may end up like me, and get talked into something you regret, and in my case, I am presently going through a costly cover up. There a number of quality tattoo designs sites to help you find the perfect design for you, and the best part is you can do all the looking from the comfort of your home, without feeling the pressure you sometimes feel at a parlor.
Once you have found the right tattoo, how do you find a good tattoo artist? Firstly, the most obvious, is word of mouth, you can see firsthand the quality of their work.
Secondly, a good tattoo design site will also have a parlor directory. For example, I know one site that has a list of over 10,000 tattoo parlors in 38 different countries, so you are bound to find one in your area (I know I did).
And finally, pay a visit to a number of parlors, check the sanitation quality, talk to the artist, and make up your mind if it feels right, then take a seat and get tattooed!
When your tattoo has been applied a protective layer of ointment will be applied to the tattoo to prevent infection, and you can ask your tattooist what cream to buy to help the healing, and they are not expensive (available at most supermarkets). For best results, apply the cream twice a day for 2 weeks after you have been inked, and stay away from salt water in this period, as the salt water may cause fading and dry skin, both things you don't want after your investment.
The good news is now is the perfect time to get inked as the competition between tattooists for your dollar is fierce, and because tattoo design has evolved to be regarded as an art form, and tattooist have become highly skilled artists who are not just doing their apprenticeship at a parlor, but are coming out of universities with visual art degrees, there is no better time than now to get tattooed.
